Short abstract:
Ageing is associated with a decline in function caused by such as impaired muscle metabolism, with reduced muscle strength and function. A diminished protein pool increase metabolic vulnerability in response to physical stress. Furthermore, ageing is associated with a decline in immune function, commonly referred to as inflammageing. All these age related changes make older adults a specific risk group in terms of surgical interventions. Prehabilitation involves targeted interventions, primarily focusing on nutrition and physical activity, to enhance resilience before planned surgery.
