Personal profile

Research

I am a Quaternary geologist and my research is focused on the glacial and climate history during the last glacial-interglacial cycle and up to the present, with a main interest in the behaviour and geomorphological legacy of the Eurasian Ice Sheet complex, and the climate and landscape development in Scandinavia.

In my research, I use a wide range of methods and analytical techniques, such as sediment coring of terrestrial climate archives (e.g. lakes and peatlands), geomorphology and sediment mapping, and spatial analyses of geodata in geographical information system (GIS) software. For interpreting the past climate and environmental history from sediment cores I use both classic and more novel laboratory analyses of their geochemical as well as physical properties (e.g. grain size, LOI, XRF, and CT-scanning). For dating purposes, I mainly use radiocarbon dating of macrofossils, varve counting and cosmogenic nuclide exposure dating, but also tephrochronology, optically luminescence dating, and 238U-234U-230Th disequilibrium dating. My work on the glacial history has, however, also stimulated a host of other avenues of palaeo-environmental research, e.g. using ancient sedimentary DNA to trace the first arrival of plants, animals and humans following deglaciation in Scandinavia.
