Research

I am professor of Business Administration (with a focus on Public Management and Accounting) at the Department of Business administration.

I have a PhD degree (2000) in Business Administration from the University of Pisa. My doctoral thesis was focused on "Group Management and Accounting in the Italian and Swedish local governments". I act as part-time associate professor at the University of Siena (Italy). I have also acted as research fellow and visiting professor in various countries: Stockholm University (2010-2011); Sydney University (July-August 2011); Victoria University of Wellington (September 2011); Kozminsky University (2015- present).

My research focuses on smart cities, hybrid organizations, public governance and budgeting, and whole-of-government accounting. I have been involved as coordinator or participant in national and international research projects funded by different sources (Swedish Research Council, National Science Center of Poland, Portuguese Foundation for Science and technology, UArtic, Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education, and Nordic Council of Ministers). Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are used in my research. I am ad hoc referee for several international scientific journals and have been a member of the scientific and organizing committee of several international conferences and workshops. I am member of the editorial board of several international journals: Accounting Auditing and Accountability Journal; Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies; Journal of Accounting and Organizational Change; Pacific Accounting Review; Journal of Management & Governance, Springer; International Journal of Public Sector Management, Elsevier; Management Business Administration Central Europe, Kozminski University; International Review of Public Administration, Taylor & Francis; Tekhne. Review of management studies review, Elsevier; Journal of Finance and Management in Public Services, 2008. Since 2015 I am a board member and vice Chair of Comparative International Governmental Accounting Research (CIGAR) network.

I act as Guest Editor in several international peer-reviewed journals: Accounting Forum (2017); Baltic Journal of Management (2012); Critical Perspective on Accounting (2013); Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting and Financial Management (2014); Qualitative Research in Management and Accounting (2014); Public Management Review (2020); Public Money & Management (2009, 2014, and 2017); Public Performance & Management Review (2016); Pacific Accounting Review (2017); Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal (2019-2020, and 2022).

I have been external examiner of three doctoral theses (one at the University of Zaragoza and two at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town). I acted as opponent of two doctoral thesis (one in 2014 at Åbo Academi, and one in 2015 at Tampere University in Finland). I have acted as supervisor for one PhD student (Peeter Peda) who defended his theses in October 2012 in Tartu University, for one PhD student (Emma Capalbo) who defended her theses at Siena University in June 2013; two PhD students (Sara Giovanna Mauro and Daniela Pianezzi) who defended their theses at Scuola Supereriore Sant'Anna of Pisa in November 2016. I act as co-supervisor of three PhD students (one at Nord University, Norway; one at Tartu University, Estonia; and one at Salerno University, Italy).
