I am Dean of the Faculty of Health Science and associate professor of oral health. My research focuses mainly on oral health in elderly people with illnesses and disabilities.
My great research interest is the situation of elderly people, particularly the frail and ill, with regard to oral health. I successfully defended my doctoral thesis "Assessments of oral health status in frail patients in Hospital" in the spring of 2004, at Malmö University. The focus of the thesis was an oral health assessment form to be used in the care of ill and elderly people (Revised Oral Assessment Guide, ROAG). The purpose of this was to assess oral problems at an early stage and thus be able to treat them before they cause too much damage. Today ROAG is part of the national quality register SeniorAlert.
Research currently being carried out is part of the Oral Health – Public Health – Quality of Life research environment and is focused on elderly people. One of the projects concerns frail patients who have had a fall. Another project, which is a collaboration with the Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg, is developing an instrument to be used by dental care staff on elderly patients in order to assess their ability to carry out their personal dental hygiene, and identify causes of difficulties in carrying out oral hygiene among those with oral hygiene problems. The use of this instrument will allow for preventive and curative measures to be applied taking the individual's circumstances into account in a better way than what is currently the case.
I have been Dean of the Faculty of Health Science since April 2016, and was previously Head of School of Health and Society. In recent years I have taught oral health within the dental hygiene programme, principally on scientific methodology courses. I have also supervised and examined Bachelors' essays. Over the past year I have chaired assessment panels reviewing licence applications to the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) for three-year dental hygienist programmes.
