Resilience Empowerment for Adaptation Capacity of Teachers in Post-Disaster Sustainability of Education

This project aims to empower teachers to sustain education “before, during and after disasters”. In line with this aim, the project also focuses on enhancing teachers' capacity to cope with disasters, protect students' psychosocial well-being and make education sustainable within the disaster education cycle of “mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery”. European Union policies such as the “Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction”, the “Digital Europe Programme (2021-2027)” and the “European Civil Protection Mechanism” emphasise the need to continue education after disasters. This project is directly in line with EU education and disaster policies and will contribute to the creation of disaster resilient education systems across Europe. United Nations (OCHA, 2023) and CRED (2023) reports highlight that rapid post-disaster recovery is directly linked to maintaining access to education. Training teachers in disaster resilience strategies ensures learning continuity and protects children’s right to education even in crisis situations. In the aftermath of disasters, the resilience of education systems is tested by infrastructure collapse, student displacement, and psychological trauma. Teachers serve as the frontline “responders” in restoring normalcy, yet many lack the necessary training to navigate “post-disaster recovery” effectively. This project aims to empower educators with the skills and tools needed to re-establish learning environments, provide psychosocial support, and integrate digital education solutions when physical schooling is disrupted. By strengthening teacher capacity, we ensure that no child’s education is left behind due to a crisis, fostering a more sustainable, inclusive, and adaptive educational framework across Europe and beyond
