Abstract

Fresh water is a precious resource on our planet, and agriculture consumes up to 70% of the accessible fresh water. In this paper, we present our design of a smart Internet of things (IoT)-based irrigation system for optimizing the water usage in agriculture and farming. We have implemented a prototype system with Arduino microcontrollers and Raspberry Pi. The smart system showed a reduced use of water and easier maintenance of a target soil-moisture level in comparison to a timer-based system.
