Abstract
This chapter outlines the notions of risk and the risk society in relation to terrorism and surveillance in a globalised world. The focus is on terrorism carried out on Australian soil or by Australians, but also connects those occurrences to the international terrorism landscape. The chapter discusses legal implications and changes in response to terrorism and looks at terrorism’s underlying causes and the differences and similarities between state- and dissident terrorism. It further discusses old and new terrorism, as well as the policy implications of terrorism and counter-terrorism, and rise of the ‘surveillance society.’ The chapter discusses the effects of CCTV, whistleblowing, and the way governments have reacted to data-sharing.
