Abstract

Background: Myocardial infarction are among the most common cause of death both globally and in Sweden. The number of people diagnosed with myocardial infarction in 2021 was about 23 000 people in Sweden. The risk of myocardial infarction increases with age. The metabolic risk factors for myocardial infarction are high blood pressure, high blood lipids, as well as lifestyle-related factors such as unhealthy eating habits, low physical activity and smoking. Aim: The study aimed to describe elderly persons experiences after suffering a heart attack. Method: Ten research articles were included in the qualitative general literature review. Results: Describes elderly persons experiences of having suffered a heart attack and is based on ten qualitative research articles. Three categories were formed: physical challenges, communication and participation and mental health challenges and five subcategories. Discussion: The most prominent findings of experiences after a heart attack were fatigue, fear and treatment.
