Background: Cardiac arrest is a serious and sudden event that can be caused by various factors. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is crucial for maintaining blood circulation and oxygenation, with chest compressions and rescue breaths being key components. The nurse’s role during CPR includes quickly identifying cardiac arrest, providing support to both the patient and the family, and working effectively within a team to maximize the chances of survival. Aim: The aim is to highlight nurses' experiences of the family’s presence during CPR of a relative. Method: The literature review used a qualitative design and was based on ten original scientific articles retrieved from the databases Cinahl and PubMed. The text analysis was conducted according to the four-step model described by Friberg (2022). Results: Based on the findings, three main categories emerged. The main categories were Stress and anxiety during family presence in CPR, Practical and communicative challenges during CPR and Ambivalence between closeness and distance. Nurses experienced that the family’s presence during CPR could be both stressful and significant. Supporting the family was also seen as morally important, which helped the nurses grow as individuals. Discussion: The method was discussed based on the four quality concepts: Credibility, Confirmability, Dependability, and Transferability. In the results discussion, the findings Stress and anxiety in the presence of family members during CPR and Ambivalence between closeness and distance were addressed. These two findings were discussed in relation to McCormack and McCance’s nursing theory, as well as from an ethical and professional perspective on nurses’ experiences.
