Abstract

Background: The newly graduated nurse (NGN) acquires during education a theoretical knowledge of the profession. It´s only when the theoretical knowledge is integrated with experiences that the ability to act adequately comes. Emergencies happen everyday at the hospital which could be problematic for a NGN. The dreyfusmodel describes the importance of the NGN handling rules and guidelines in the initial stage in order to develop over time and eventually transfer to an expert who performs based on experience. Aim: The aim was to illuminate the experience of newly graduated nurses regarding emergency situations in hospitals. Method: A literature study based on 10 qualitative articles from the databases Cinahl and PubMed. Articles were reviewed according to HKR's review template for qualitative articles and were thereafter analyzed according to Dahlborg-Lyckhage (2017) three-step model. Results: The experience of emergency situations could be divided into two categories which were Lack of experience and Collaboration in teams and also four subcategories which were From novice to expert, The fear of failure, Time and resource and The importance of support and communication. Discussion: To discuss the method Shenton (2004) credibility concept was used. The results discussion highlights three findings that were From Novice to Expert, Time and Resource, and The importance of support and communication. The findings were discussed based on the Karasek and Theorell (1992) requirement-control-support model and the Benner (1997) dreyfusmodel. The discussion also interweaves the ethical and societal perspective.
