Abstract

During the year 2022, the government has put forward a proposal to introduce a free after-school program, where all students should be offered time at the afterschool center. In the proposal, they have prioritized the best interests of the students and focused on the benefits that the after-school program brings to the students. The purpose of the study is to find out how educators perceive the proposal for a general after-school program with a focus on the positive and negative effects that the introduction of a general after-school program may entail. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, where educators have been asked questions addressing the general after-school program, meaningful leisure time, social learning, and care. The results show that educators believe the proposal for a free after-school program is good, provided that the right resources are allocated to increase staff density and improve facilities, but that the proposal itself is a step in the right direction where all students should have access to the after-school center.
