Background: Dementia, also known as cognitive disease/cognitive impairment, is a collective term for several diseases where the brain is affected. A common indication at the beginning of the course of the disease in cognitive impairment is forgetfulness and effect on memory. Being a relative to a person who has dementia can lead to major changes, such as the role from being family to becoming a carer. This could mean financial, physical, emotional as well as social impact on the relative. Purpose: To describe relatives' experiences of caring for a person with cognitive impairment in ordinary housing. Method: A literature review based on qualitative articles. The articles were searched and found in the databases PubMed and Cinahl Complete and were reviewed using a review template for qualitative articles from HKR. The analysis was carried out based on Friberg's three-step model (2017). Results: The findings were divided into three main categories and seven subcategories. The main categories were: The experience of when a relative is affected, fears, anxieties and the experience of help and support. Method discussion: Shenton's (2004) trustworthiness concept of credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability, was used in the discussion of method. Discussion of results: Three findings: The experience of taking on the role of a caregiver, the feeling of anxiety and the feeling of need for help and support has been discussed based on the transition theory, the ethics of duty and from the perspective of society.
