Abstract
Background: The nurse's quality of care is shaped by various ethical values as well as laws and guidelines. A deficiency in the nursing quality can lead to healthcare injuries or other nursing errors that can be linked to the work environment. The nurses work environment includes many factors and therefore it is important to highlight the factors that affect nursing quality.Aim: The aim was to shed light on factors that affect the nurse's quality of care related to the work environment in a hospital.
Method: A literature review based on qualitative and quantitative studies obtained from the databases Cinahl and PubMed. The analysis was carried out according to Friberg's three-step model where HKR's review template for quantitative and qualitative studies was used.
Results: After completing the analysis 4 categories and 5 subcategories emerged. The categories were Staffing, Workload, Communication and Management.
Discussion: The method was discussed based on quality concepts like credibility, dependability, confirmability and transferability. The result was discussed based on two findings which are Patient Safety and Missed or delayed care as consequences of factors in the nurse's work environment. The findings were also discussed based on theories of person centered care and theory of suffering. The nurse's work environment has extensive implications for quality of care. The literature study might be of importance to actors who are involved in the modeling of healthcare, as the results of the study answer questions that are of interest to society.
