Abstract

Background: Children and young people have the right to play, rest and meaningful leisure time. They also have the right to participate in social development and to have power, control and influence over their everyday lives. Through a safe and accessible leisure environment, opportunities are created for the target group to participate in physical, social and cultural activities. These contexts and activities are protective factors for young people's health and wellbeing, which means that meaningful leisure time can contribute to health from an individual, group and societal perspective. However, many young people state that they are stressed that they have too little time for leisure time, as well as what they should fill their leisure time with. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine and gain knowledge about high school youth (15–19 years) experiences and conditions for meaningful leisure time. Method: The study is based on a qualitative method with an inductive approach. A total of ten semi-structured and individual interviews were conducted, which were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: The results of the study show that young people feel they have little time left for leisure, and that leisure is characterized by high demands in various ways. It is clearly visible in the results that young people value social context and contact with other people highly, and that digital media play an obvious role in their everyday life. Conclusion: Young people value their leisure time highly. Leisure time is a time for relaxation, social connections and personal interests, as well as a protective factor for young people's health. The results show that time is the most prominent obstacle to meaningful leisure time, which motivates further research into young people’s conditions for meaningful leisure time.
