Abstract
Background: In Sweden, one in five men report having experienced intimatepartner violence (IPV). In the narrative of IPV men is primarily seen as abusers.
Aim: To highlight the experiences of men subjected to IPV.
Method: A literature review based on eight qualitative studies that were identified
through systematic searches in PubMed and Cinahl during the autumn 2024.
These studies included in-depth interviews with 147 men from five different
countries who had experienced IPV.
Result: The findings from the included articles were organized into two main
themes. The first, In the shadow of violence, consists of four subcategories: The
nature of the violence, the abused father, Coping-strategies and consequences of
the violence and To be invisible. These themes highlight the various forms of
violence experienced by men, the use of children as weapons and the struggle for
men to identify themselves as victims. Men often reported not identifying with the
public narrative of IPV victims and described experiencing ridicule and mistrust
from individuals and institutions. The second theme, To be seen focuses on the
experiences of positive encounters characterized by trust, active listening, and
validation in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.
Discussion/conclusion: authors argue that the use of inclusive language may be
important for the men to acknowledge their experiences and to seek help.
