Abstract

Background: Intimate partner violence is a widespread social problem where affected women seeking healthcare are difficult to identify. Their symptoms are often vague and they rarely talk about their vulnerability spontaneously. The nurse’s treatment and caregiving become crucial in the outcome of meeting with the woman and to if the woman dare to tell. The nurse needs knowledge and a readiness to meet intimate partner violence. Aim: To describe nurses experience in healthcare of meeting women affected by intimate partner violence. Method: A general literature study was conducted in Cinahl and Pubmed. 11 qualitative articles were reviewed against HKR:s review template (2016). Then the articles were compiled in qualitative article overviews and analyzed based on Friberg (2022) five-step-method. Results: The compiled material is presented as three main categories: Encounter that affect, Emotions that effects the profession and Frustration and challenges. The nurses were emotionally affected by the encounter. There was a need for more knowledge in the field. Different challenges as work environment and culture are mentioned. Discussion: The method of the study has been reviewed according to Shentons (2004) four credibility concepts: credibility, confirmability, dependability and transferability. Strengths and weaknesses in the quality of the method have been discussed. The result of the study has been discussed based on three main findings: Stress - not being enough, Trust creates security and Concern about the lack of knowledge. Discussion about the Nursing Need Theory, consequentialist ethics and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
