Abstract

A registered nurse bears a great responsibility to care for every human´s right to good and equal health. Therefore, nurses have a responsibility of being able to identify and take care of female patients who have been exposed to domestic violence. According to World Health Organization (WHO), domestic violence is considered one of our public health problems. The aim was to describe nurse´s experiences of meeting women exposed to domestic violence. The method of this work was a literature study with a qualitative approach based on scientific articles that had been reviewed, analyzed, and compiled into a new result. The result was found from 10 scientific articles. Two themes and four subthemes were determined from these scientific articles. The conclusion was that nurses generally felt insecure when they met women that had been exposed to domestic violence. The insecurity was based on lack of knowledge, about when and where questions about violence should be asked by a registered nurse. Nurses felt that the heavy workload, lack of time and the overwhelmed personal feelings for these patients and their stories could preclude them from giving these women person-centered care with good quality.
