Abstract

Background: More and more people are getting older, cognitively ill, and still live in their home. This means that the family member often naturally takes on the role of caregiver for his or her next of kin. Family caregivers perform extensive emotional and practical work that relives formal care. The specialist nurse in the care of the elderly work with a holistic perspective where the older person and family member are in focus and have an important role to play in providing support to family carers. Purpose: The purpose was to study family caregivers` experiences of caring for their older next of kin with cognitive illness at home. Method: An interveiw study with a qualitative inductive approach was conducted with ten family caregivers in two muncipalities in southern Sweden. Data were collected with individual interviews, which were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The study resulted in two categories: 1) Changed life situation with the subcategories: adaptation to changed life situation, uncertain future, and changed relationship, and 2) Opportunities and difficulties to support with subcategories: functional support and need for relief and time of your own. Conclusion: Family caregivers felt that the future was uncertain, that their next of kin changed, which led to both a changed relationship and a changed situation. In order to experience a functional situation, support was important, both from family, friends and the formal care, which is important since family caregivers from a societal perspective are an important care resource.
