Abstract

Background: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease which often affects children. The disease is autoimmune and is not curable, only treatable. There are several complications both short term and long term. The disease affects the whole family differently. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe parents' experience of having a child with type 1 diabetes. Method: A general literature review based on qualitative articles where Fribergs (2017) fivestep model was used. Result: The analysis resulted in four categories; When the child is diagnosed, A changed everyday life, Information, lack of knowledge and their consequences and Worry as a part of life. Discussion: The method discussion uses Shentons (2004) quality concept. In the result discussion the following main findings were discussed; Changes in the parent's everyday life, Experience of information, Lack of knowledge and Worry as a part of life. The findings were later discussed together with familycentered care and the ICN ethical code for nurses. This literature review can be useful for nursing staff who encounter parents to children with type 1 diabetes and for the parents' which child in the future will be diagnosed.
