Abstract

Background: A central component in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is the individual's self-management. By highlighting the experiences of individuals with T2D in self-management, the study aims to better understand their needs and strengthen nurses to offer person-centered care and support in T2D self-management. This research is significant for identifying resources, barriers and challenges and for promoting holistic nursing to optimize treatment and self-management for T2D. Aim: The aim of the study is to illuminate the experiences of middle-aged and elderly individuals in self-management for T2D. Method: This literature review is based on 11 qualitative articles. The articles were searched through the Cinahl and Pubmed databases, and the quality of the articles was assessed using HKR's review template. Friberg's four-step model was applied for the analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in three main categories; Balancing self-management and enjoying life, Hindering factors for self-management and Intrinsic and extrinsic motivators for self-management. Six subcategories were identified; The impact of daily life on self-management, Family and social challenges in diet-related self-management, Lack of knowledge and information, Economic barriers, Motivators for self-management and Support from loved ones for self-management. Discussion: The quality of the literature review was assessed using Shenton's description of the trustworthiness concepts. The discussion of the results emphasizes the importance of knowledge about T2D for managing self-management, the need to strengthen internal locus of control in individuals with T2D to promote self-management, and the influence of the individual's culture on self-management. These aspects are discussed in relation to KASAM, nursing core competencies, duty ethics, empowerment, a societal perspective and intercultural communication.
