Abstract

Sustainability is a central concept and is used in many different contexts. There areseveral ways to work in it, depending on the type of company involved. Corporatesocial responsibility (CSR) is also a commonly used concept and a recurrentquestions is, should banks contribute to society or not? This survey aims toinvestigate whether and, if so, how and why banks carry out their sustainabilitywork and community contributions, and if it differs depending on the bank'sownership structure. The study includes seven interviews with six banks with threedifferent ownership structures to examine the differences. The three differentownership structures investigated are listed, customer-owned, and savings banks.The study has its basis in CSR, corporate sponsorship, ESG, shareholder, andstakeholder theory but also from previous research on the subject. The result showsthat the sustainability work does not differ significantly. The listed banks considerthemselves to be far ahead in development, which has its explanation in theshareholder theory. The investors place high demands on the listed banks at thesame time that this theory also affects them in their contribution to society. Thesavings banks and the customer-owned bank have a more comprehensive socialcommitment that is in line with the stakeholder theory.
