Background: More women today are getting breast cancer with the disease causing emotions such as grief, anger, distress, death anxiety and denial. Therefore it is important, support is provided by the nurse in order to help manage the disease. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how women with breast cancer experience the nurse's encounter in a nursing context. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature review based on 12 qualitative articles. The Cinahl and PubMed databases were used to search for articles. HKRs review template (2016) for qualitative articles has been used to examine the quality of the articles. For analysis, Friberg's (2017) analysis model comprising the five steps was used. Results: Two main categories were identified: Experiences of support from the nurse and Experiences of sufficient information from the nurse. Four subcategories were identified: Support during their illness, Lack of support during their illness, Amount of significant information available and Lack of information during the meetings. The experience of lack of support and insufficient information emerged in most cases. Lack of support from the nurse contributed to the women feeling noticeably lonely and an increased sense of worry and anxiety. Discussion: The method of the literature review is discussed based on Shenton’s (2004) strategies for ensuring thrustworthiness; credibility, verifiability, dependability and transferability. Three findings from the results have been identified for further discussion and linked to Watson's (1993) nursing theory which discusses ethical aspects and societal perspectives.
