Abstract

This thesis set out to explore how decentralised rewards can be used to incentivise recycling, with Blockchain technology as the main focus. These questions were to be explored within an application previously developed. The subject was broken down into two research questions, one theoretical and one practical. The theoretical question, how can the smart contracts be implemented within the app to decentralize rewards, was studied by conducting a literature review to gain knowledge about both incentives effect on recycling behaviour and how smart contracts can be utilised to this end. The yield of the literature review indicated that incentives do improve recycling habits, and that smart contracts can be used to facilitate the incentivising. The practical question, how can the smart contracts be implemented within the app to decentralize rewards, was explored by integrating the previously developed application with the Ethereum Blockchain, enabling users to create and interact with smart contracts. A set of requirements were devised and implemented. This was done utilising a variety of libraries along with the wallet provider MetaMask to allow users to customise, create and interact with smart contracts. The smart contracts could then be utilised as reward systems which can incentivise users to improve their recycling habits.
