Abstract

Tourism in southeast Skåne has seen a gradual increase annually which has reached new heights after the pandemic. Both tourists and the local population have been negatively affected by the strain it has on the society, which creates a need to spread out the visitor flow. Previous research has shown that gamification can motivate tourists to visit less crowded places and therefore improve their experience. By exploring which design features that tourists find motivating to visit less crowded places in relation to usability, can this study contribute with additional knowledge to previous research. Our study includes a qualitative approach in combination with concept driven design research since we aim to answer the research question: “Which design features should be prioritized to design a mobile application with usability in focus to motivate users to visit less crowded places?”. The investigation showed results that the chosen target group (Swedish tourists between 20-40 years) rather prioritizes design features that are informative than gamification. However they were positive to these features of gamification if they enhanced their experience and the purpose of the application. This both corresponds and contradicts previous research, but as a common ground is the agreement that the user needs differs depending on both target group and context. By analyzing the results we could arrange the design features that were identified from what the informants considered to be of high priority, medium priority and low priority. The highest priority are following: Illustrate visitor flow, Offline data and route planner. Future research needs to explore the chosen target group in a practical user environment and a real context to further investigate which needs the target group has in the correct context of the application.
