This study aimed to explore and design a digital learning environment that integrates the functions and characteristics of existing learning management systems with social communications platforms such as Slack and Discord, in online education for a higher educational context. Previous research has shown that today's learning management system students use in higher education lacks functions that the students are accustomed to use. Meanwhile the communicative platform lacks the means to operate an online education. The method used in this research was a qualitative approach with the help of a concept-driven design research. The study developed a design concept for a digital learning environment that integrates functions from digital communication platforms and learning management systems. The concept was evaluated with participants and the result showed that all participants appreciated the integrated digital learning environment, that all tools needed to study in an online education context were gathered in one place. There was also a divided opinion from a design perspective. Half of the informants felt like the design had too much information all in one place, which made the feeling that the design layout was confusing. The other half of the informants liked that all information was visible and did not feel that the layout was confusing. Furthermore, all the informants appreciated the ability to modify the learning environment from their preference. In conclusion, the study identified a need for a new digital learning platform that is integrated and fulfills students’ needs to conduct their studies in online higher education.
