Abstract

To dare to share things and services with strangers on a platform within the sharing economy, trust is required. A trust that functions as the currency of the sharing economy. Lack of trust between users seems to be the most important factor for people not to participate in a sharing economy. Therefore, this study has aimed to investigate how to increase trust in the platform and in the users of a non-profit sharing economy mobile application, in order to increase the propensity to borrow and lend objects and services in the local area. To investigate this, a number of different trust-building mechanisms and elements have been studied and identified in the literature, which later was confirmed in a survey. These were implemented in the existing sharing economy application Swinga which was dicovered in a enviromental analysis. The work culminated in three design concepts that were evaluated by five interviewees, and then underwent a final revision. The design concepts examined consisted of 1) a complete profile, 2) reviews and ratings, and 3) a deposit system. The design concepts culminated in three design proposals, all of which proven to have an impact on trust. The result shows that all design concepts have had an impact on trust. The conclusions are that a complete profile consisting of a number of different trust-building elements has a positive impact on trust. Reviews and ratings also have a strong positive impact on trust, as long as ratings and reviews are positive and contain two trust-building elements. A deposit system also has a strong influence on trust, whether it is a deposit in the form of a thing or monetary value.
