Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore students' perceptions of their influence in the Swedish educare system with focus on the students' perspectives. By allowing room for the students' own voices and reflections, we aim to create expanded insights into their experiences of influence, and its significance in their daily lives within the context of the educare program. The empirical material of the study consists of a qualitative study involving students from preschool to third grade in an educare care facility in southwestern Sweden. The data comprises approximately 4.5 hours of recorded interviews, which have been analysed through a childhood sociological approach, using Hart’s ladder of participation, with an emphasis on children's perspectives. The results of the study suggest that students have varying opportunities for influence, but that these opportunities are to some extent constrained by the structural factors within the educare program. To a certain extent, students accept these limitations as they wish to share responsibility and influence with the educare teachers, resembling the top step on Hart's ladder of participation. Our informants believe that they have influence over the educare activities, but express a desire for increased influence, particularly concerning gatherings and educare student councils, and that their influence becomes more visible in the daily activities. This may serve as an appropriate means for the educare staff to implement children's perspectives within the educare system.
