Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus has increased in the last decade among children. The disease is expected to have a more aggressive physical impact in children than adults, while pharmacological resources are limited for children. The family's lifestyle is of great importance for the treatment to be successful but also for the risk of developing diabetes. An increasing proportion onset in this area places new demands on health care nurses’ preparedness at a children’s clinic to meet families with children with T2DM. Method: The study has a qualitative inductive approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants and were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis revealed two main categories: Prerequisites for preparedness and Factors that hinder preparedness. Six subcategories also emerged: previous experience in similar areas, knowledge of the importance of a good response and communication, teamwork with other professions, lack of routines and guidelines, lack of specific knowledge about T2DM in children and a low prioritized area in healthcare. Conclusion: There are prerequisites for a good respond of children with T2DM and their families, while gaps in healthcare need to be filled to optimize preparedness.
