Abstract
In the classrooms, we have seen an increased use of various electronic tools, digitaltextbooks, digital games, software etc. The important question is whether these digital
learning resources can support the students´ different needs in mathematics teaching. In
this specific study, we have chosen to focus on the digital learning resource Nomp. The
purpose of our study is to examine how math teachers in middle school describe the way
they use Nomp in a differentiated mathematics teaching. Furthermore, the purpose is to
examine what opportunities and obstacles can arise when using Nomp. The study has
been carried out with the help of semi-structured interviews, we have interviewed five
middle school teachers who teach mathematics and who use Nomp. Based on our
research questions, the result shows that the teachers who were interviewed use Nomp in
different ways when differentiating. When using Nomp, the areas of use includes skill
training, feedback, adaption and that it is used as a supplement. The result also show that
the teachers describe different types of opportunities and obstacles when using Nomp.
Possibilities that emerged are that Nomp is easily accessible, contains functionality that
benefits the students and that the teacher has a good overview of the students´ knowledge.
Furthermore, the result show that good technical competence enables differentiation.
Obstacles that emerged from the interviews were that Nomp contained a lack of
mathematical content, a lack of functionality and that Nomp is not a comprehensive
learning resource. In the same way that the teachers’ technical competence can be an
opportunity, it can also be an obstacle, as can be seen in the results.
