The long lifecycle of the oak and its close relation to humans makes it both ecologically and historically significant. This study aims to investigate the historical state of the oak in the early 19th century in a project area linked to the Biosphere Reserve Östra Vätterbranterna. This as a contribution to the project Eksuccé and their work to recreate a sustainable oak landscape. The oak was important as timber for the navy and was regulated by the crown by law since the 16th century. In the 1830s the right of disposition of the oak was released. National oak inventories were conducted in connection to this process. The inventory material has been used in research before, including Per Eliasson whose research has served as a starting point for this study. The investigation area is located between Gränna and Adelöv in Jönköping County and has not been explored in previous studies. This study is primarily based on oak surveys of the 1820s and 1830s. The study deals with the spatial distribution in terms of density, but also how the oaks of this landscape are described. Qualitative and quantitative data in the protocols have been processed, analyzed and visualized through maps and diagrams. The results show a variation in oak density between the villages. The oaks grew on the infields, commonly in the meadows, and were strongly influenced by pollarding. Many were damaged by rot and unusable to the navy, but likely valuable for biodiversity.
