Abstract

The purpose of this study is to highlight and identify the role and the mission of teaching assistants in special education schools in two municipalities in Sweden. Through interviews with principals and special education teachers, the expectations placed on teaching assistants and the various challenges they face, including varying levels of education and lack of job descriptions, are examined. The result shows that expectations on teaching assistants are high from both special education teachers and principals. The lack of planning time, education and continuous professional development emerge as a challenge. The study highlights the need to clarify and strengthen the role and mission of the student assistant in the complex demands and expectations placed on them.
