Abstract

In this thesis, we examine students' motivation and interest in reading, as well as possible influencing factors. The aim is to identify factors that either promote or hinder students' reading motivation and interest, with a particular focus on third-grade students and their teachers. To collect data, we employed a quantitative method using surveys, where a Likert scale served as a key tool for analyzing responses from both students and teachers. The study is based on sociocultural theory, which highlights how social and cultural factors, such as the home environment and its interaction with the school, contribute to shaping students' motivation and interest in reading. The results show that both the home and the school play a crucial role in fostering students' motivation and interest in reading. We have identified several key factors that influence motivation, including parental involvement, teacher support, and access to tailored and diverse reading materials. The sociocultural perspective and the chosen quantitative method provide the study with a deeper understanding of how students' reading motivation is shaped. Furthermore, insights emerge on how targeted initiatives can be designed to strengthen students' interest and develop a positive attitude that promotes long-term engagement in reading.
