This case study explored how pupils aged 9-12 described their experiences of speaking English in their English lessons at school, where English is taught as a second language. The aim was to pinpoint key factors for positive experiences among second language learners with a particular focus on oral interaction in the target language in a classroom setting. One such factor was the effect of teaching solely in the target language and the pupils’ reported experiences. Another factor was how Communicative Language Teaching motivates the pupils to speak English during English lessons. We also set out to identify a potential connection between pupils’ exposure to English outside of the school setting and their attitudes to speaking English in school. Our findings show that the classroom environment and choice of activities significantly impact pupils’ experiences and self-confidence. The results suggest that the teacher’s use of English when applied effectively is viewed by pupils as highly motivating when it comes to pupils’ willingness to communicate in English.
