Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the variety of viewpoints of active faculty members with respect to the indoor playing environment in School-age Educare Centres, where such facilities are also utilised for regular Primary School teaching. This study has been conducted through a digital survey with open-ended questions and is based on responses from twenty faculty members. The study utilises a phenomenographic approach in order to investigate, analyse and catalogue the viewpoints of survey respondents who are active in School-age Educare. Survey participants were asked to describe their opinions of how the physical environment influences the playing habits of pupils, and how they perceive the effectiveness of indoor facilities in School-age Educare Centres, when utilised for the explicit purpose of conducting play. Through a phenomenographic analysis, the responses from survey participants can be grouped into eight broad categories: Comfort with a familiar environment; Materials and supplies; Working together; Shared facilities; Large surface areas utilized for breakout groups and activities; Facility surfaces; Hierarchy; and Unavailable resources. Responses were evaluated through two different analytical lenses: firstly, by considering the potential advantages of School-age Educare activities and Primary School teaching being conducted in shared facilities, and secondly, by considering the potential disadvantages. The results of the study can be used to create more beneficial working environments and improve School-age Educare activities through an increased understanding of how such environments are perceived. Additionally, results can be used to identify the assumed advantages and disadvantages of instances where School-age Educare Centres and Primary Schools utilise shared facilities.
