In March 2009, the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå) compiled a scientifically based knowledge inventory to understand to causes of juvenile delinquency. Risk factors focused early school failure, poor attachment to school and poor school environment. Similary, the Swedish government decided to map pupils' problematic school absences (Gren Landell, 2016). This study demonstrates various risks linked to school absence, such as a higher risk of exclusion, mental, health problems, substance abuse, and criminal behavioure. Therefore, it is important to study the relationship between problematic school abscences and crime in order to shed light on the public debate that links problematic school absences with, social consequences and crime. The aim of this study is to investigate five Swedish documentaries focusing om young people who have a problematic school absence. This qualitative study describes how these young people, their schoolas and their parents are portrayed. By using content analysis the aim is to study this media material. Four emerging themes detected in the documentaries. The results auggests that the knowledge requirements and grading systems used by the schools places far to high demands on the student, especially children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric functional variations. The documentaries conclude that, this causes frustrations and hinders pupils to cope with the social order of the schools and of society in general. The documentaries also conclude that such high demands cause social exclusion that might lead to criminal behaviour.
