Abstract

Green structure plays a central role in promoting ecological sustainability and climate adaptation in urban areas. It contributes to preserving biodiversity, regulating temperature, managing stormwater, and providing essential ecosystem services. In Stockholm, the green structure, particularly the so called green wedges, has a long and well-documented history. Over the years, these wedges have developed into a crucial component of regional planning, serving both ecological and social functions. This thesis examines how the green wedges have changed over time, with a particular focus on their development within the framework of Stockholm's regional development plans. Through a qualitative analysis of planning documents, consultation responses, and interviews, the study highlights how evolving societal needs, political priorities, and contemporary research have influenced the development of the green structure. From serving primarily a recreational function, the green wedges have come to be regarded as strategic resources for ecology, climate, and society. As urbanization and climate change progress, a more proactive management approach is required, where green structures are integrated into a comprehensive strategy. The latest regional development plan, RUFS 2060, emphasizes strengthening the connections between urban and natural environments rather than merely preserving them. To ensure the future functionality of the green structure, interdisciplinary planning, long-term strategies, and cooperation across municipal and regional boundaries will be crucial. A flexible, multifunctional green structure is the key to a sustainable metropolitan region.
