Abstract
Children and young people's upbringing is a crucial factor for their further physical and mental health in adulthood. Lifestyle habits are established during childhood and follow the individual throughout life. Previous research shows that children and young people's living habits differs in different age groups. Symtoms of illness are usually not appearing until the children comes up in the secondary school age and therefore it is very important to highlight the problem and put in appropriate interventions at an early age. The aim of the study was to examine how the self-reported lifestyles are characterized among students in sixth grade in a chosen municipality. This was done to investigate whether lifestyles differ between boys and girls. The chosen method was to conduct a survey of the target group. The study results shows that students in the municipality in general have good living habits. They sleep regularly, eat both breakfast, school-lunch and hot dinner in the evening, they have a regular intake of fruit and vegetables and are physical active both at school and at sparetime. Sweets, softdrinks and energydrinks were mainly consumed during the holidays and the use of television, computer and mobile amounts to a reasonable level. However, the conclusion of the study is that there are some differences between boys and girls living habits.
