Abstract
Background: In Sweden, many people suffer from heart attacks every year, andrecovery is both physical and psychological. Quality of life is affected by how
well patients handle the acute crisis and the long-term recovery, which includes
physical activities and lifestyle changes. Nurses play a central role in supporting
patients through rehabilitation and preventing future problems. After a heart
attack, patients can experience feelings such as anxiety and depression, and
recovery requires patience and realistic expectations.
The purpose of the literature review is to describe patients' experiences of
recovery after a heart attack.
Method: General literature review where qualitative scientific articles were
analyzed.
Results are produced by analyzing ten scientific articles that included 242
participants. Two main categories emerged: new perspective on life and
awareness of limitations. The results show that many patients experience a
decreased quality of life after a heart attack, which is due to physical limitations,
anxiety, depression and changes in social relationships. The author emphasizes the
importance of a holistic approach in the care of myocardial infarction patients to
support their recovery and improve their quality of life. Discussion of results: The literature review highlights patients' experiences of
recovery after myocardial infarction. Two findings emerged: patients' experiences
during cardiac rehabilitation and patients' coping strategies.
Conclusion: to improve recovery, longer and more individually tailored
rehabilitation is needed. Research on patients' experiences is necessary to develop
guidelines that better support their needs.
