The purpose of the study at hand was to examine preschool teachers' opinion on a language developing way of working in free play. Two principals, which both head several preschools, were contacted which resulted in six respondents at four preschools who showed an interest in participating. Working with language development in free play materializes in different ways at different preschools and with different preschool teachers. The differing opinions have been identified through qualitative interviews and the respondents' opinions have been analyzed through a phenomenographic analysis and interpreted through sociocultural theory. The results show how the preschool teachers use their surrounding environment as a tool to promote children’s interest and to encourage their free play and language development. The preschool teachers share a common understanding when it comes to how they should handle children responsive in free play.
