Abstract

Background: Coercive care means that the care staff force themselves on an individual's life or limit the ability to decide over their life. In 2021, 12,500 patients were cared for in Sweden under the law on compulsory psychiatric care, which is an increase of 46% since 2017. Aim: The aim was to illustrate on adult patients' experience of compulsory care in a psychiatric ward. Method: The study is a qualitative literature review with an inductive approach. The articles were retrieved from the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. The articles were reviewed according to HKR's review template of qualitative studies and analyzed based on Friberg's four-step model. Results: The results are based on two main categories: the experience of relation to the nursing staff and to be cared for against their will. The study shows that patients experienced a lack of communication and treatment during coercive care. Discussion: The study was assessed based on Lincoln & Guba (1985) credibility concepts reliability, dependability, verifiability and transferability. The findings from the results that were raised in the discussion are the patient's experience of coercion in relation to the patient and coercive measures. The results show that communication and a trusting approach were of great importance in promoting the patient's security and autonomy.
