Background: In Sweden, the prevalence of chronic pain is estimated at one in three or one in four people. Pain is a subjective experience and is defined as chronic when the duration exceeds 3–6 months. Chronic pain is a complex condition that involves the whole person with physical and psychological impact. To be able to offer great person-centered care to this patient group, the nurse's knowledge of chronic pain is crutial. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe patients' experiences of living with chronic pain. Method: A general literature study was conducted based on 12 qualitative articles. The databases Cinahl, Pubmed and PsychInfo were used to search for articles, the quality was reviewed and assessed using HKR's review template. Analysis was carried out using Friberg's five-step model. Results: The results of the study led to four main categories; When life is inhibited, The search for acceptance during the journey to a new life, A changed everyday life and The neglectful healthcare meeting. Five subcategories were developed; The imprint of pain on the previously functioning body, The burden of being dependent on others, Facing the future with ambivalence, Voluntary and involuntary loneliness, Compromises and negotiations with pain in everyday life. Discussion: The quality of the literature study has been reviewed based on Shenton's credibility concept: Credibility, Transferability, Dependability and Confirmability. Three findings are highlighted; The neglectful care encounter, Pain's imprint on the previously functioning body and The search for acceptance during the journey to the new life. The findings are discussed based on discourse ethics, ICN, the nurse's core competencies, the societal perspective, KASAM, global goals and finally transition.
