Ett steg ut i verkligheten: upplevelser av att ha ingått i ett traineeprogram

: En kvalitativ litteraturstudie

Abstract

Background: The nursing profession is foreseen to face a shortage in registered nurses, while newly graduated registered nurses report not feeling prepared enough to take on the professional role. Employers can offer newly graduated registered nurses a trainee programme to prepare them for the workplace. Previous studies show an increased need for exploring the way newly graduated registered nurses experience these programmes, as well as a need for an overview of how they experience the transition from student to registered nurse. These programmes can prepare new graduates to work according to the framework for the profession and responsibilities which follow, as well as facilitate a safe transition from student to registered nurse.
Aim: The aim was to describe new graduate nurses’ experiences of partaking in a trainee programme within two years post-graduation.
Method: A qualitative literary study in which twelve qualitative articles and one mixed-method article are analysed using Friberg’s Five-step model.
Results: Analysis resulted in three main categories; To be self-aware, To feel new as a nurse, and To feel belonging.
Discussion: In the result discussion two main findings are highlighter; Help to feel safe in the new role, and A shortage of experienced mentors. The findings are discussed using Meleis’ transition theory and the Magnet Model. Trainee programmes can help ease the transition from student to registered nurse and contribute to gained confidence for the new graduates. This literary study can be used by hospitals and other employers to help newly graduated registered nurses to feel safer in their new role, developing trainee programmes, and attract new employees.
