Abstract

Introduction: In Sweden, school meals must be nutritious according to law and should account for 30% of the recommended daily intake of NNR 2012. This study examines whether the planned school lunches comply with NNR 2012. Aim: The aim is to investigate whether the planned school lunches in middle school, grade 4-6, in a municipality in southern Sweden comply with NNR 2012. Material and method: Nutritional values from planned school meals (n=40) have been imported through Mashie, a diet computer program, to Excel. There, mean, max, min, median and standard deviation were calculated. Mean values for energy and nutrients were analyzed against the respective reference value and mixed diet and vegetarian diet against each other using t-test. The same calculations were repeated without 150 grams of milk (n=40). Results: The majority of the nutritional values corresponded to 30% of NNR 2012. The values examined were energy, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, total fat, saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, vitamin C, vitamin D, folate, iron and salt. The nutrients that deviate from the reference value are polyunsaturated fat (p<0,001), vitamin D (p<0,001) and salt (p<0,001). Energy and nutrient content in mixed and vegetarian diets are similar. Without milk included, the mean value dropped from 1,6 μg to 0,9 μg (reference value 3 μg). Conclusion: Based on the results of the study there is a risk that the meals do not comply with the school law’s quality requirements regarding nutritious meals. According to the study there is an opportunity to improve the nutritional content of the planned meals, which in turn can contribute to good health among the pupils in this municipality.
