Purpose: Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women worldwide. The main method of treatment is surgery where mastectomy is widely used. The loss of a breast can have profound psychological and physical impacts and therefore it is of great importance to examine and portray women’s experiences of having undergone this treatment method. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe women’s experiences after having undergone mastectomy as a result of breast cancer Methods: A qualitative literature review based on 10 scientific articles. The search for articles occured through systematic searches in nursing related databases CINAHL and PubMed. Results: The analysis resulted in two main categories; the changed body and accepting the situation. Based on the two main categories, four subcategories emerged; self-image and confidence, sexuality, coping with the new situation and support from your surroundings. Discussion: The method discussion was based on Shenton’s (2004) credibility strategies. The result discussion was based on three findings; Impaired quality of life, The affected sexuality and The strength of being vulnerable. Mastectomy induce physical and psychological challenges. The women experienced a change in body image, identity and self-image after the operation. Conclusion: The study has shown that strong emotional reactions occur in women who have undergone a mastectomy as body image, identity and sexuality are affected to a great extent. The result can contribute to an increased understanding among nurses who can then provide support to women who undergoes the procedure.
