Student thesis: Bachelor

Abstract

Fitness culture, encompassing the sociocultural aspects of exercise and physical well-being, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, driven by the rise of online fitness communities alongside traditional gym culture. This thesis seeks to explore the intricate relationship between these two domains, highlighting the intersection and mutual influence that they have on each other. Both gyms and online fitness communities serve as spaces where individuals seek guidance, motivation, and social support for their fitness journeys. Gyms provide physical space for exercise and community building, while the online fitness community extends beyond geographical boundaries, connecting individuals globally through digital platforms. Based on existing research, a conceptual model was created to provide clarity and structure in the thesis, highlighting the most prominent parts. Three unstructured interviews were conducted in gym environments, purposively selecting participants that could contribute to a multifaceted view on the topic. Ethnographic observations were conducted at various gyms in Sweden and Barcelona with notes being taken during gym sessions. Nethnographic studies were conducted online, focusing on three fitness influencers, Mike Thurston, Joey Swoll, and Sean Tafe (Shizzylifts). This thesis contributes new insights into the multifaceted realm of
fitness culture, exploring the intersection between online and offline.
