Abstract

There is a lack of research regarding how Swedish upper secondary school textbooks discuss the field of knowledge related to photosynthesis. For this reason, it is this works intent to introduce and discuss this field, in the form of a textbook analysis of the book Iris Biologi 2 by Henriksson and Gleerups (2013). The overarching goal of this work is in other words to illuminate any eventual problems with the textbook in question, and therefore enable comparisons to be made to other similar textbooks. Hopefully this can enable educators to work preventatively. The analysis is divided into three major categories: the books’ structure, what specific words it uses to discuss photosynthesis, and what conceptions about photosynthesis may communicate. To enable this analysis, relevant research will be used. It is concluded that there is some risk that the textbook possibly poses problems, mostly in regards to its’ structure, and that it is reasonable to use this analysis to compare and shed light on other similar textbooks. Possible benefits and drawbacks of the textbook are discussed, and are deemed reasonable for an educator to be made aware of and therefore work with. The work ends with specific recommendations for how education with the aid of the textbook, and similar textbooks, might be undertaken.
