Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers and students experience that the learningenvironment is affected by a daily movement program. During 10 weeks, a grade F-1 and agrade 2-3, have performed 10-15 minutes of physical activity on a daily basis. The studyoutlines an overview of previous research on physical activity. Using qualitative interviews,we focus on three main issues.1. In what way do teachers and students perceive that the learning environment in theclassroom is affected by the daily movement program?2. What are the perceived effects by teachers and students?3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the movement program for teachers andstudents? The study leans on the theory of KASAM, Sense of Coherence. We have chosen KASAM asit meets the requirements that educators and students face in school. The theory states howthree factors; Comprehensiveness, meaningfulness and manageability affects an individual tohandle challenges of various kind and how they strengthen commitment and the desire tosucceed. In summary, the results of the study indicate that daily physical activity, in the formof movement programs, has several positive effects on the learning environment.Concentration, motivation and endurance increase and thus also the performance. Thedisadvantages that have arisen are connected to the physical space, that is, the classroomspace sometimes is not enough for movement as it becomes crowded. Working withmovement programs during school day creates good conditions for the learning environmentand is perceived positively by students and teachers. In order to create the conditions forextended movement during school day, educators need education, time in their schedule andsupport from the management in their work. The most important conclusion we can drawfrom the study is that increased mobility during school days can contribute to a quieterlearning environment as well as greater concentration and stamina for students.
