Abstract

Purpose and questions: The study aims to investigate what reading aloud looks like for children with language vulnerability and if the special pedagog is involved in creating support structures and adaptations to make reading aloud accessible and developmental. The lingustic vulnerability is limited to children with a language disorder and children with Swedish as a second language. Method: This is a qualitative study and semi-structured interwievs have been chosen as the method. In the municipality where the study was carried out, no special education teachers work in the preschool and therefore special pedagogs were interviewed. Preschool teachers were also interviewed to get answers to the research questions and all the respondents answers were categorized into themesbased on the purpose of the study. Results: The study results show that reading aloud does not take place to the extent that is favorable for developing interest in reading and vocabulary. Most adaptations that are made reading aloud accessible are based on the children´s age and not on their lingustic abilities. The special education teacher in the preschool has been involved in various language projects but not specifically worked with support structures and adaptations to make reading aloud accessible to children with language vulnerability. The empirical material has been analyzed from a sociocultural perspective. Conclusions: Based on the study´s research questions, the following conclusions can be drawn: The preschool has a lot of work ahead of it on organizing more reading aloud and accessible reading aloud for all children. A special teacher specializing in language, writing and reading development can contribute to strengthening the proactive efforts with targeted adaptations and support structures and thereby work for language-promoting read alouds.
