Browsing damage by ungulates in Swedish forests is estimated to cause value reductions of billions Swedish crowns each year. With tract logging as the dominant forestry method, large areas are created with sensitive saplings which form a buffet for ungulates. Since forestry has a significant role for Sweden’s economy, there are strong motives to keep browsing damage under control. The extent of browsing damage can be reduced by reduced game populations, but that could be counterproductive to the government's goal of maintaining game populations in a favourable conservation status. Deer game also has a recreational value in society and their presence can increase the biodiversity. The study investigated, through a questionnaire, private landowners’ views on forest browsing damage, browsing damage management and possible future improvements. The results show that Scanian forest owners in general estimate grazing damage to be moderate. They largely own their forests in the northern municipalities, and their land consists mostly of spruce. Roe deer are considered to cause the greatest damage, mainly by grazing and horn sweeping. The majority of respondents are active hunters, and many believe that game populations need to be reduced. Many also believe that significantly more game fodder is needed in the forests. The study's results highlight the need for a more modern forestry model where more game fodder is created. A revision of the game management plans can also be of great importance to keep the deer game populations at a level that allows forestry to be run in a sustainable manner.
