Abstract

This study aims to examine how teachers in leisure-time centers work with conflicts between students and how they reflect on their support in students’ conflict management. The study was conducted as a qualitative investigation using semi-structured interviews, in which six leisure-time teachers participated. Their reasoning, methods, and strategies for conflict management were analyzed and related to a sociocultural perspective. The results show that all teachers work preventively through value-based education and discussions about emotions. Conflict management primarily takes place by teachers acting as mediators between students. Most conflicts arise in shared spaces, such as sports fields and corridors, where the teachers’ presence appears to be the most effective strategy for preventing conflicts. The conflicts mainly concern perceived injustices or misunderstandings. The study indicates that teachers view conflict management as a learning opportunity and as a positive aspect of students’ daily development.
